Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of an elementary school student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste from one of the juries. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
