Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and Encarna Sanchez who was hairdresser. She was a
performer with a passion in her youth and would reenact TV commercials to keep
the family entertained. However, she decided to concentrate her energy on
dance. After nine years of ballet instruction at Spain's National Conservatory
she was able to further her education under the supervision by a range of
well-known dancers. When she was 15 she followed her destiny when she outclassed
more than 300 other girls at an audition for a talent agency. The contract she
signed secured her roles in Spanish TV shows , as well as music videos. It
opened the doors to a promising career in the world of film. Cruz made her
debut in a film in The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Following
that, she appeared briefly in Framed (1992) by Timothy Dalton. The
Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her third film. In it she played one of
four sisters who were seeking the affection of a handsome deserter from the
Army. The film also won numerous Goyas awards, which are the Spanish equivalent
to the Academy Awards. Cruz was a well-known Spanish actress with her average
of three to four film per year growing resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh)
offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar
(who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she
was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes
(1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her
luck changed completely in 1998 when the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus
Ojos (1998) was awarded the title of award for the Best Actress Goya. After a
few more chances at film in the English language Cruz's first international
breakthrough was in Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), where she played
the unchaste and very well-meaning nun. Cruz was soon in high demand throughout
the Atlantic as well as the west coast as the film garnered many awards and
praises. Woman on Top (2000) was her next major project. It was an American
comedy about a chef who has extraordinary cooking skills, as well as the
